The numbers 16 - 99 are a little more uniform in the way they are formed. If you know the first 15 numbers in Spanish, you are well on your way to easily adding the rest to your repertoire.

The way it works now is as long as you know the 10's, for example 10, 20, 30, 40 and on up to 90, all you need to do is add y plus the corresponding number 1 - 9 to complete the full number.

Keep in mind that the y is added to all of the numbers starting with the number 16, however many numbers under 30 have an alternate spelling.

I demonstrate all of these quirks of counting in Spanish in the tables below.

Number Spelling Pronunciation Audio
16 dieciséis, diez y seis dee-yes ee sayees
17 diecisiete, diez y siete dee-yes ee see-ay-teh
18 dieciocho, diez y ocho dee-yes ee oh-choh
19 diecinueve, diez y nueve dee-yes ee nway-bay

NOTE: Did you notice that in the numbers 16-19 the z is dropped from diez and replaced with a c? Also, the y for and is changed to an i which represents the most common spelling of the numbers.
Make sure you pay attention to that in order to properly spell those numbers.

Something else to watch out for. Notice how some of the numbers now have accent marks in order to stress which vowel is accentuated? I go into this in full detail on my Spanish accent marks page.

Number Spelling Pronunciation Audio
20 veinte bayeen-tay
21 veintiuno, veinte y uno bayeen-tee oo-noh
22 veintidós, veinte y dos bayeen-tee dohs
23 veintitrés, veinte y tres bayeen-tee trays
24 veinticuatro, veinte y cuatro bayeen-tee kwah-troh
25 veinticinco, veinte y cinco bayeen-tee seen-koh
26 veintiséis, veinte y seis bayeen-tee sayees
27 veintisiete, veinte y siete bayeen-tee see-ay-teh
28 veintiocho, veinte y ocho bayeen-tee oh-choh
29 veintinueve, veinte y nueve bayeen-tee nway-bay

NOTE: Notice that in the numbers 21-29 the e is dropped from veinte and replaced with an i? Notice the y is replaced with the i again.
This is something else to watch out for in order to properly spell these numbers.

This should give you a solid understanding of counting in Spanish and how each number is spelled and pronounced. On the next page we will continue with the remaining numbers in Spanish and by the end of these lessons you should be able to count in Spanish.
