Common Spanish Phrases

Here we will learn the some common Spanish phrases used in everyday conversational Spanish.

So far in this series of simple Spanish phrases we have gone over greetings in Spanish and how to say goodbye in Spanish. To start at the beginning of the series click here.

 

We learned how to say hello and goodbye in several different ways. We also learned ways in which to introduce ourselves formally and informally, along with some common responses to those introductions

In this series we will get a little more personal by talking about ourselves or asking questions about each other

 

 

Common Spanish Phrases - Conversations

How are you today? ¿Cómo estás hoy?
Very well thanks Muy bien gracias
How is your brother? ¿Cómo está su hermano?
Please sit down Haga el favor de sentarse
What is your address and phone number? ¿Cuál es su dirección y su número de teléfono?
Happy New Year Feliz año nuevo
Where do you live? (informal) ¿Dónde vives?
Where do you live? (formal) ¿Dónde vive?
I live in San Francisco Vivo en San Francisco
What city are you from? (informal) ¿De cuál ciudad eres tú?
What city are you from? (informal ¿De cuál ciudad eres usted?
I am from San Francisco Soy de San Francisco
Happy Birthday Feliz cumpleaños
What do you do? ¿En qué trabajas tú?
I am a student Soy estudiante
I am a teacher Soy profesor (mas)
I am a teacher Soy profesora (fem)
Do you speak Spanish? ¿Habla usted español?
Yes I speak a little Spanish ¿Si, hablo un poco de español.
Please speak a little slower Por favor, hablar más despacio.

Notice just like in the Spanish introductions page, that there is a difference in endings for profesor/a. This is because in Spanish certain words take on masculine and feminine attributes. So if you are a female teacher you would be a profesora and a male you would be profesor.


There you have it, some common Spanish phrases to help you start to ask your Spanish speaking co-worker some questions and actually understand the answers. I know it felt good when I was able to have a brief one minute conversation.
