The colors in Spanish are an important building block of your Spanish vocab and in helping you learn some descriptive language in the process.
We will start with the most basic colors and then move to a brief grammar lesson to help you with proper placement of the words.
| Spanish | Color | English |
|---|---|---|
| amarillo | yellow | |
| rojo | red | |
| azul | blue | |
| verde | green | |
| blanco | white | |
| negro | black | |
| gris | grey | |
| anaranajado/naranja | orange | |
| morado | purple | |
| marrón/café | brown | |
| rosa | pink |
So here is some basic Spanish grammar to go along with your colors in Spanish lesson.
The Spanish language consists of nouns that are either masculine or feminine. Whenever you use an adjective such as a color to describe something or someone, it must match the gender of the noun or the pronoun that it modifies.
So for example:
I have a yellow ball = Tengo una pelota roja (ball is feminine, therefore rojo becomes roja)
I have a yellow book = Tengo un libro amarillo (book is masculine, therefore, amarillo remains in the masculine format)
In most cases words ending in a are feminine and words ending in o are masculine.
Also, in most cases, unlike the English language, in Spanish, colors come after the nouns they describe.
A black cat = un gato negro
A white dog = un perro blanco
An exception would be if the color is describing an inherit quality, then it goes in the front.
The blue sky = el cielo azul
The orange house = la casa anaranjada
Did you notice that casa is feminine? Making anaranjado now anaranjada.
Some colors do not change with gender, such as: azul, marrón, rosa, gris and verde.
